People define themselves in terms of what they are not. If I am forced to accede that one who is not like me is like me, it cancels out my concept of self and I cease to exist. I am frightened of this, but must learn not to be; it is the definition of freedom.
People define their needs in terms of what they do not have. If I see that you have something I do not, I am oppressed by my lack. I allow my lack to rule my life, seeking always that which will fill the gap, but I must learn not to; this is the definition of slavery.

I posted this as a comment on one of my friend's Facebook pages. The topic of discussion was gay marriage: why are some opposed to it; why do some desperately seek it? I was overcome by my philosophic muse.
